MADRID (AP) — Jorge Sampaoli’s second stint as Sevilla coach is over.
Sevilla sacked the Argentine coach on Tuesday, two days after a 2-0 loss to relegation-threatened Getafe in the Spanish league.
“After the defeat at Getafe, which leaves the team just above the relegation zone, the club has decided to part ways with the Argentine coach before the international break,” Sevilla said in a statement. “The image shown by the team in these last matches led the club to take this decision, in the hope of being able to recover in the last 12 rounds of the Spanish league.”
Sampaoli coached Sevilla from 2016 to 2017 before joining the Argentina national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup. He impressed during his first spell at Sevilla to try his luck with the national team, but Argentina mostly had struggled under Sampaoli, who was fired after the team’s round of 16 elimination to France in Russia.
Sampaoli leaves with Sevilla in 14th place in the Spanish league, two points from the relegation zone. The traditional southern Spanish club have won one of their last five league games, losing three and drawing one. He has seven wins, seven draws and 12 losses in the competition.
Sevilla were knocked out by Osasuna in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, and will face Manchester United in the Europa League round of 16 next month.
Sampaoli, 63, has led Sevilla in 31 total appearances since taking over from Julen Lopetegui last year, with 13 wins, six draws and 12 losses.
Sevilla were last relegated to the Second Division in 2000, returning the following season and remaining in the top flight ever since.
Sevilla did not immediately announce a replacement for Sampaoli. He said he was “already working on getting a new coach as soon as possible”.
Sampaoli has also coached the Chile national team and more recently French club Marseille and Brazilian teams Santos and Atletico Mineiro.
